STUDENT ANNUAL TRAVEL INSURANCE
What
is an E111?
An E111 is a form that entitles you to state-provided emergency
medical treatment in countries that are members of the European
Economic Area. You receive treatment on the same terms as
nationals of the country concerned and the treatment will
either be free or provided at reduced cost. If you have had
to pay something, you can usually claim a full or partial
refund from the authorities of the country that you visited.
An E111 does not normally cover private treatment.
An E111 is not a substitute for travel insurance because it
covers only emergency treatment and there is no non-medical
cover – for example, for personal liability or your
baggage. So you still need proper travel insurance. However,
it is often a term of travel insurance that, if you use your
E111, your insurer will waive the excess that would normally
apply to a medical claim.
To obtain an E111, get leaflet T5 Health advice for travellers
available from Post Offices and travel agents. Fill in the
form on the back of the leaflet and take it to a Post Office.
The Post Office will stamp and sign the form for you. The
E111 is free and is valid indefinitely. When you use it abroad,
you will need to hand it over or provide a copy, so it’s
a good idea to travel with at least one photocopy. If you
have to hand over the original, get a new E111 when you return
to the UK.
Outside the EEA, the UK has reciprocal healthcare arrangements
with some countries, enabling you to obtain emergency state
treatment on the same basis as nationals. You may have to
pay for this treatment and payment cannot usually be reclaimed.
There are many countries with which the UK has no reciprocal
agreement at all . You will have to pay for treatment and
the cost may be high. Make sure you have travel insurance
to cover medical costs that can’t be reclaimed.
