If you don’t travel much, you could just take out single-trip
insurance as and when you go. But, if you’re luck
enough to get away more than twice a year, you’ll probably
save pounds by taking out an annual or multi-trip policy.
If you have a bank credit card you may well have annual cover
included. You should always check the level of cover and protection
that the credit card offers as often the limits to the cover
are not sufficient. The cover may well be enough for certain
geographical areas, but if you are planning to go to say the
United States, you should obtain the highest level of medical
cover you can afford.
An annual
policy typically covers any number of trips during the
year provided each one lasts no more than a specified length
of time – often 31 days. Most annual travel insurance
policies automatically include about two weeks’ winter
sports cover a year.
If you are going away for longer than a month – for
example, during a gap year – you’ll need long-stay
insurance. Some policies are aimed specifically at
backpackers
and tend to have extra cover thrown in, such as a payout if
you are the victim of a mugging.
Standard policies generally exclude cover for risky
sports, such as scuba diving or
snowboarding, so you’ll need a specialist sports
or
winter sports policy. Most providers offer a winter sports
version of their policy. A few providers specialise in cover
for other sports as well.
